 How do you shave comfortably without irritating the skin? That is a question that concerns many shavers. After a while of trial and error using different products and shaving techniques, a person tends to develop a routine that gives them a comfortable shave. For some, a comfortable shave isn't that hard to come by. For some others, shaving is considered a painful necessity. This all depends on one's skin type and genetics. In this article we will try to guide you through the shaving process with a safety razor. • The first thing you want to pay attention to is the sharpness of your knife. A dull blade pulls the hair instead of cutting it. This causes major skin irritation and can be easily avoided. Before shaving, warm up your blade by placing it in a sink filled with hot water. Preferably use shaving cream without parabens to ensure a close shave without allergic reactions. • Second, try to put as little pressure as possible on the blade while shaving. One of the most important features of a safety razor is that the handle is light, but the top is heavy. In this way, the weight of the blade does all the work without the user having to exert extra pressure. As said before, the sharpness of the blade is the key to a close shave. To keep a knife sharp, it is advisable to replace the knife regularly and to dry it after use. The easiest way to do this is to pat it dry with a towel. Another more professional way is to dip it in alcohol and then let it dry naturally. But how many passes do I need to shave properly? I'm afraid that too many passes over the same spot will irritate my skin. These are questions/comments we get a lot. It depends on the amount of facial hair to decide how many passes to make before you have a smooth face again. Usually it is enough to do two full passes over the entire face. When shaving a thick beard, it is recommended to trim with scissors first. Always shave with the grain on the first pass. This usually means shaving down, but not always. When you're done with the first pass, apply another layer of shaving cream. For a closer shave, the second pass goes against the grain. You have to be more careful because this pass causes the most cuts and irritation. So take a little more time for this, don't rush. *If you really don't like going against the grain, a horizontal shave is also an option. Start your strides at the nose and move from there to the ears. • Third and last, it is important to rinse your face with warm water and apply an aftershave lotion. We like the ones without alcohol because alcohol just dries out the skin instead of giving it the nourishment it needs after a shave. As mentioned at the beginning of this guide, it is important to keep looking for the best way to get a clean and irritation-free shave.
